-> reason was if it became my carry gun, I did not want to be out of
-> service while changing magazines (or if I don't get the new mag
-> seated, I'm SOL!). I want it to go "bang" EVERY time I pull the
-> trigger.
FWIW, Mas Ayoob once wrote a column on this subject. He specifically
warned against doing this, and he gave two reasons:
1: He acknowledged that, in theory, you might have to shoot in the
middle of a magazine change. However, he claimed that he had been
unable to document a single case of this situation ever coming up.
He DID have numerous examples of good guys whose lives were saved when
they hit the mag release while struggling with a bad guy for control of
their gun.
2: In the event that you have to shoot someone, and are charged
afterwards, police experts are going to examine your gun. They will
report that you "disconnected a safety device". The prosecutor may
introduce this fact in the trial. To a jury made up of firearms laymen,
this will sound reckless, and recklessness is a key component of some
charges. (like involuntary manslaughter, I think)
I hope you will take the above information in the friendly spirit it is
intended. I realize that it is your gun, your life, and your karma, and
that none of them are really any of my damn business. You've gotta go
with what YOU are comfortable with.
-> I'm kinda like you, my number 1 "middle of the night when the stuff
-> is flying and I don't have my glasses on" gun is an S & W k-frame.
-> No levers to mess with, no "is there one in the chamber" questions.
Perfect example of the KISS principle. You will rarely go wrong by
adhering to it!
Regards
John
