We had a visit from somebody the other day who couldn't understand why Nora needs to be in hospital because she looks perfectly healthy. The next day I saw a girl, whom I guessed to be about eight years old, walking down the hall with a basket of flowers. As I caught up to her I commented on how pretty they were. When she turned to look at me, I realized she had Down's syndrome... and then her mother interjected to say the flowers were for Nora. Gosh. We barely know these people, yet they'd come from somewhere in the suburbs because they'd heard about Nora and we'd met through the LMDSS. While they were there we also met in person, for the first time, one of our BBS users who had travelled quite a long way via public transit to see us because he'd had a similar problem at a similar age. He'd come to tell Nora in person that she could do a lot if she'd set her mind to it & work at it. That's essentially what we'd been saying, but as a teacher I know it often means a lot more when a visiting "expert" says the same things you've been trying to tell your kids!
