Do you currently own a scanner? If so, what Brand/s & Model/s?
Radio Shack Scanners; 26, 34 (2 of 'em), 2004 & 2006
Bearcat; BCT 200XLT, BC-210
Regency 10 channel mobile Monitoradio/Scanner
Always getting something new (or OLD! hehe)
What is your age? How long have you been a scanning enthusiast?
I'm 36 and have been into monitoring with scanners since I was a kid,
probably 25 years now. My dad was a cop and we had this huge scanner that
was in the house going all the time. It had tubes and crystals in it and kept
us warm and cozy in the winter... Can't put a finger on when that was, but I
was hooked!
I will ask my Dad when he gets back if he can remember what year it was...
What do you use your scanner/s for?
Mostly evading the police. No, just kidding... I have many different
reasons for monitoring. I have all the local 2meter and 70cm repeaters and
simplex frequencies punched in on a couple of banks, and if I am talking on
one of the HTs, I can enable a bank on a scanner (and lockout the freq I am
on) and won't miss anything exciting (not that there is ever anything
exciting on our repeaters). I also have all destress/emergency freqs punched
in and enabled all the time. Have only gotten 4 chances to 'be a hero' in
all these years, and then it wasn't a life or death situation...
My brother is the Asst. Chief of Police for a municipal police dept. and it
is kinda nice to monitor what is going on where he works, and then have
conversation when I see him... He is always suprised at how much I actually
know about what is going on up there... They are using a trunked Motorola
system for the City's Fire, Police, Admin, Street Dept., Sanitation, etc, and
I have yet to miss a single call because I usually have more than one scanner
going when I get 'serious' about it. Incidently, the Trunk Tracker will NOT
track the system they are using at all. We tried one out just a month ago
and sent the sucker back.
I also have a Motorola transciever that has something wrong with the output,
but still scans/follows a few programmed groups (I did not get the
detective's group (CID) or internal affairs, but the scanner still works for
that!)...
Mainly I use the scanners just to keep up with what is going on around me,
and for cheap (cheap?) entertainment...
Do you subscribe to any scanning related publications? (List Name/s)
Popular Communications, and that's about it... I am kinda limited in funds
since moving back to Arkansas from Cali, but maybe I can start to get a few
more subscriptions as time goes on... And time does go on, and on...
Do you belong to a scanning club/s (List Name/s)
Nope, I'm a loner, but again, as money allows, I hope to seek out a club that
is worthy of my membership! hehehe
Do you use another means to obtain news/information/frequencies, such as
another FTN (fido-alike) network, or internet newsgroups? (List Name/s)
As much as I hate to say it, yes... I do follow EVERY radio related Internet
Noisegroup I can... I have all kinds of spam filters and still the amount of
crap that gets past that is too much to take for long periods of time. I
find that I just do searches for specific text and call it quits after
finding what I was looking for (or more often not). There is a cure to the
spam problem in the newsgroups... All that has to be done is to get everyone
to start placing a specific line of text into each message posted. Then, we
can read only messages that contain that line of text and discard the other
80%.
I ordered the FCC database on CD-ROM almost a month ago, and have not seen it
yet.
And of course, the police call books... Which are not too bad for the money,
all things considered. I also have sent in updated info to the author/s and
found that in the next release it was corrected. Don't know whether it was
my update that got it fixed, and don't care, but it was corrected!
What is your location? (city/state/province/country)
I am in the heart of Redneck Country... Fayetteville, ARkansas
Located in the Ozark Mountains in the NorthWest corner of the state, only a
few miles from OK, KA, and MO...
I am glad to have SCAN_RADIO as a source of information and help, and find it
much more enjoyable than any of the newsgroups!
So thank y'all for being, YOU. And thanks to the powers that be for creating
this area and maintaining it...
And sorry if I rub anyone the wrong way... I find myself getting on my own
nerves sometimes, so I can imagine what others think!
