Hi Jeff Edmonson, hope you are having a nice day
PW>> So far 160 - 15 seem to pick up signals, and it does
PW>>right nice on 80.
JE> You oughtta get up early some morning (or stay up later ;->) and listen
JE>to some AM activity in the area, on 75m. You might even hear me ;-)
Hehehe... Check the CALLSIGN echo.. hehehe... If I read the knobs
and dials right it was on lsb.
PW>> The thing is, is that the electrolytic caps need time to reform.
JE> If you've already had the thing on, and working, they've reformed.
So its go or blow huh. Seems that may have happened in the hallicrafters.
There's these black cylindrical caps with waaayy to many color bands,
and a few of them have the insulation/encapsulant split radially down the
middle.
NTM the ooze I found in the bottom of the cabinet.
PW>> Problem, no replacements on hand, and the variacs I have are
PW>>unaccessible. :<
JE> Got one here... but again, if the reciever is already working, there's no
JE>need to worry about reforming the caps. If they had shorted during it's
JE>"rest", you'd know it by now!
Whew. It's a bit early for fireworks for the new year. And way too
soon for the fourth.
PW>>old caps? Ie. maybe run it for 30 - 60min a day, and leave it off
PW>>the rest of the time.
JE> Even that wouldn't have done it.
Okey doke. Filed away for future reference.
JE> What you should have done was to bring it up, to around 25v on the
88
JE>100v (same waiting time), then up to normal line voltage.
That's what I had in mind, but getting to those variacs.....
And I've a couple that are just the size for rigs like this one.
Shoot, it only calls for a 3A fuse. Lucky me, the replacement
fuse holder already had a 3.15A in it.
As a side note, I dug around and found a replacement tube. (6AQ5A)
Plugged it in and fired it back up, (not turning down the audio knob)
and rather quickly introduced my left eardrum to my right. =8{#
Dat's a lot of audio to be 1W.
