Blake Bowers will assume the responsibilities of Moderator of this echo
effective at midnight, 0000, July 1, 1997.
The decision was difficult and painful, but made with a clear conscience. I
am satisfied that Blake will be good for the echo and that it will thrive
under his guidance. I think we had a good field of contenders, including Ken
Storm, SCANRADIO's founder and first Moderator.
My plans are not definite yet, but I have already closed down my BBS, the
Hertzian Intercept, and it is a matter of time before I close my FidoNet
connections altogether. I would guess within a month or two.
The harsh reality of the matter is quite simple. The times ~ they are
a'changing. In effect, I am selling off my horses and buggies and getting a
motor car. Actually, I already have the motor car.... it's the hosses &
buggies that represent a drain on resources....and have to go.
I'm not abandoning anyone or anything and I'm not disappearing. I just have
things to do; places to go; and people to see. There just isn't enough time
in the day to do everything I like to do, so something has to give. FidoNet
remains mired in yesteryear's technology and shows no sign of revival or
renewal. But I have to keep moving.
When I got into Fido in 1989 or so, I played on an APPLE IIe and a 300-bps
modem. It was the cat's meow when I snagged a 2400-bps modem in 1990. And
real hot dawg stuff when I put up a BBS and a Fido node of my own in 1991
using an old clunker of an XT-clone. Boy, was that ever hot stuff.
It didn't take long to graduate to a pair of Dell 386DX/33's and from there,
my learing curve and path of progress went on an upward curve as steep as a
telephone pole. It hasn't flattened yet. But Fido and its old ways do
represent a bit of a load on top of other loads, and it is time to do some
load shifting. It is time for me to be moving on. I shall certainly be
eternally grateful to FidoNet for the experience and education I gained over
the years.
On, but not out. I have obtained a full-time, extremely high speed
connection to the Internet and installed Microsoft BackOffice and Windows NT
4.0 Server, together with Exchange Server, Information Server, and four
information services:
Web: http://204.210.20.47
FTP: ftp://204.210.20.47
and experimental Gopher and ILS servers. I plan to implement some sort of a
scanner mail list as well as maybe a private newsgroup server, too, probably
dedicated to scanners and scanning. Boys 'n girls, MY hands are full.
I will continue to write my "Experimenter's WorkShop" column for Monitoring
Times and to publish the monthly World Scanner Report. I don't have any
plans for another book real soon, but I am kicking some ideas around. The
radio market and the demand for paper print are at an all-time low,
(everybody wants a freebie these days), so I don't know what the future holds
in store in terms of my writing, but they'll have to drag me out, kicking and
screaming.
That's it up to the moment. Please join with me in congratulating Blake
Bowers, our soon-to-be new Moderator, SCANRADIO's third one ever.
Congratulations, Blake!
