Perhaps true for many schools but the U of Arkansas has put more teeth
into language skill requirements in recent years.  A great deal more
writing is required and courses tailored to technical writing are a
required part of the curriculum.  I believe it is a pretty recent change
due to complaints from employers about graduates that could not
communicate information after graduation.
