   Yeah, well, it's a Greek word, and, like most languages, French is
spelling it in a way that makes it sound as close to the Greek
pronunciation as possible, and English, more often than not, uses the
French spelling. In the the Germanic languages (like Scandinavian),
spelling it 'meter' comes closest.

   Yep. But the metric system came several thousand years later than the
word 'meter'.
