Ah, found the difference. In OE I always had the list of posts highlighted
(active window instead of the preview pane view the active window). If I
click IN the message then it works like it used to but if I click on the
message in the list of messages then space takes me to the next message.

Interesting change, is there a key that switches from one window to the
other (list to message preview) so I don't have to touch the mouse to
switch active windows?

   I see the same old behavior in Windows Mail.  I just tried it.  Make sure
you have the message downloaded already.  If you don't and you hit spacebar
again before waiting for it to download then it will move to the next
message.
