subject: What is DirectToSOM C++ ?

Hallo Jonathan!

AK>> Please note that DTS was dropped from the SOM 3.0 release

maybe he means that DTS support WILL NOT BE supported anymore with VACPP
4.0. (thats an offical statement in the meantime. they (the VACPP
developer) meantioned it at ColoradOS2 conference 1996, and it is offical
in the meantime.

JdBP> I would be inclined to disbelieve the latter, however, for the
JdBP> simple reason that it would imply that the SOM 3.0 runtime doesn't
JdBP> support SOM 2.1 applications. I haven't heard screams and shouts

thats the case. (you have to change some SOM 2.1 configuration files
(SOMIR, DSOM implementation repository, ...). they dropped a lot of
frameworks and replaced it with other frameworks.

JdBP> about Workplace Shell refusing to run when people install SOM 3.0,
JdBP> so I assume that that is _not_ the case. (-:

more: when you install a DSOM 3.0 application, you cannot talk to a DSOM
2.1 object and vv. :-). so much for compatibility.

AK>> I was startled because I used DTS myself, but perhaps IBM dropped the

JdBP> If IBM discards a working, useful, and utilitised technology in

 JdBP> C++ programmer on their hands.  (-:

so they will.

just in case:

It seems that the new SOMobjects SDK 3.0 does no support Direct-To-SOM (DTS)
anymore. Does it mean that VACPP DTS support will be discontinued?

It seemed that DTS support was one of the key features of the VACPP compilers.

Yes, that's right. The next version of VAC++ will not have DTS support in it.

I agree. But unfortunately, the meandering strategies and incompatible
interfaces presented to us by the SOM team coupled with the very small number
of people who use DTS made it too expensive for us to keep it up-to-date.
