JL> I was wondering what the latest version of the Java Development Kit
JL> is. I would also like to know if anyone could recommend a book on
 JL> OS/2 Java.

SB> v1.02 is the latest, with rumors that v1.1 will be ready in
 SB> april.

I've seen that on the Hursley site. Do you know what any of the differences
will be between 1.1 and 1.02?

PW> The nice thing about Java is that for the most part, Java is Java. It
PW> doesn't matter if it's for OS/2, Windows 95, Unix, or Freds Custom
PW> Operating System. Thats one reason our friend Bill is doing
PW> everything he can to kill it.
 SB>
SB> That's right, any Java book should do the job. However, watch
SB> out for books that devote a large section to J++ (Microsoft's version
SB> of Java). Also, you should have a look at Sun's tutorial:

 SB> http://www.javasoft.com/books/Series/Tutorial/introl.html

SB> You can read it online, or, as I recommend, download it. I know it's
SB> not the same as reading a physical book, but at least it's free, and
SB> you don't have to retype all the examples or snippets. Also, there are

Funny. I've just downloaded it.

SB> quite a few Java magazines (I know about online magazines, but there
SB> should also be some regular news stand magazines). And then there
SB> are the newsgroups, although I think these are good if you have a
SB> question. Otherwise it's difficult to learn much (I've tried and
 SB> failed).

I'll check out some news stands and see. Thanks.

JL> So then I could grab any book on Java and it'll be fine? Could you
 JL> recommend a book that's good?

SB> I've like my OS/2 Warp Programming for Dummies. I think that
SB> the whole Dummies series is really good to introduce a new subject.
SB> But when you need to go beyond that level, then you need other books.
SB> Also, Java is fairly new, about 2 years, and evolving rapidly. If
SB> you get a book, you'll want one that covers Java v1.1, not simply
 SB> v1.0 or v1.02.

The Dummie series isn't that expensive. I'll check it out. Though I would
like to delve deeper into java then just the beginning stuff. (After I get
the beginning stuff down pat that is!)

Thanks for your reply.
James.
