 You are referring to Unix, where everything is a file. At the time Unix
 was not seen as what it is now. People were used to what IBM, Digital,
 Data General and others offered at the time.

 Unix was/is a proprietary system from AT&T. and only used by AT&T and at
 universities. MS dos is tailored after CP/M that was inspired by RT/11 from
 Digital.

 All the above was implemented on very expensive mainframe and minicomputers.

 CP/M was for 8 bit processors and the first PC's were 16bit without
 memory management.

 Check the circumstances of the history first, before you make bold
 staments.

 Because apparently they form the core of Fidonet. The progressive ones are
 found on facebook and whatever other Social Media is popular at the moment.
 If you force the conservative people out of Fidonet, the net will lose
