If there exists an idea out there that one day computer use will be such that students will no longer need to be able to read then the next logical step to follow that would be to no longer expect students to think either since computers can (simulate) thinking for us now. Reading is perhaps the most important skill a person needs to function well in and out of school. The mind must be exercised and used to continue to develop and grow. Computers can never replace the need to learn to read any more than they can replace a classroom teacher. Children need human interaction with adults. The more high-tech we become, the more high-touch we will need. dt EH>You say that you doubt that it will come to pass that computers will EH>read to kids and kids will no longer have to learn to read. There EH>are already programs out there that will read to kids. The advantage EH>so far is that they also highlight what is being read, so it helps EH>those who cannot read. One of the things that concern me is distance EH>education. There are a great many of these programs here in EH>Oklahoma. The teacher is at a local college and all instruction EH>comes in via satellite to a TV monitor and computer stations. The EH>thing that worries me is that it now comes from a local college, but it EH>could come from anywhere in the world and be controlled by anyone.
