As far as I'm aware, they're not even sure of the _exact_ mechanism of how it
works.

Fat bloody chance. I remember a while back 2MMM had an ad that went "If you
drink and drive, you're a bloody idiot, but it needn't be the end of the world".
I called and wrote saying that it promoted drink driving, as they claimed it
would reduce the penalty. No consequences for your actions means go ahead for
many brain-deads.
Two phone calls and a letter later, they were still playing it. Apparently,
(I wasn't aware of this fact before hand- stupid me) sponsors are worth more
money than whining listeners.

They're gambling on one of two facts. No-one did high school science, or,
they did, but it's that long ago, they've forgotten all about it.

From what I could gather, the large bulk of the Pan crop went towards
"alternative medicines".
And from what I understand, "alternative medicines" are exempt from the
strict testing and controls that normal medicines are. The trade-off is that
it is illegal to claim that "alternative medicines" can actually cure
something, while legal to state that they _may_ do anything.

Not really. It's important to be nice to the people who pay you.
Ultimately, it's the customer who pays your wage. In the case of media, the
sponsors are the customer, because the media sells advertising, the mediao
(customer) buys it.
The listeners don't actually buy anything from the media, they're just along
for the ride.
