subject: Knobby Trees

I don't know if my messages are getting out...(on this or other echoes for
that matter) so...I will ask my question again.
Does anyone know anything about knobby trees? These trees are
pruned back very heavy every fall. (This is what will form the Knobs on
the tree as it starts to mature and age) We received one from my father
in-law for a wedding present in October, I would like to know if any of
you out there knows anything about them...I need to know about the
temperatures that they can take...My father in-law lives in Long Beach,
so they have mild winters...we live in northern Calif...We don't have
snow (well maybe once every few years for part of a day) but, we do
have frost, some days it stays frozen almost all day...Do I need to
cover the tree or what? Should we use a smud-pot(sp)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks...
