The wisdom of hindsight. At the time the compatibility layes were developed,
the problem was in the hardware, where the implementation of the serial
ports in IBM-PC's and Digital-PC's was different.
At the time quite a few people working for Digital were active in Fidonet.
They have also been active in early connections between the USA and Europe,
using the companies internal network. As far as I know this all happened
before the split of fidonet into different zones.
The only concept of pipes in MSdos was the use of "|". It was implemented
by use of intermediate files.
