I tried it on one of mine, it asks then if no reply, the computer will
automatically restart after so many minutes. As described in the kb article
Rich G posted. Of course the article won't do much good for XP Home as Home
doesn't have GPedit.msc . I expect Pro would also restart.
From the KB article
After a typical successful Windows update installation process, the user
might be prompted to restart the computer for the updates to take effect.
This prompt appears after every 10 minutes by default if the machine is not
restarted by the user. In the absence of user intervention, the computer is
automatically restarted by Automatic updates and this can cause loss of
unsaved user data.
I find the use of the word might to be interesting. Sounds like they might
not prompt you under some conditions.
I found it interesting that when I turned on automatic updates there was
nothing telling me that it could automatically restart the PC. There is a
sentence in a couple of spots in the help file for automatic
updates."If you need to restart your computer for an update to take
effect, Windows will notify you and will restart your computer at the
scheduled time." and "If you are an administrator for your
computer, you can delay the restart; otherwise, Windows warns you and then
restarts your computer for you" wonder how many people read that ?
Excellent reason not to use automatic updates
