 I know that, although Asimov was not first-class as a scientist, if
we take that to mean that he did original work and advanced the
science. He was a first-class SF writer though...

Asimov wrote in excess of 150 Books. Less than 30 were Sci Fi.  The rest
were on various science fields and 2 were on religion. (Asimovs Guide to the
Bible Vol 1 & 2)
His gift was being able to explain scientific matters in an understandable
and enjoyable manner.
