Or does it?

A pair of 10/100Mbps NICs will cost no more than $80.00. A short pice of
CAT5 cable wired as cross over is about $10.00 

The Belkin USB file sharing doovie costs $149.00 (little box and two cables).

USB does 11Mbps, the network cards will do 100Mbps (and full duplex).

The USB thing is only ever good for two machines, with a cheap hub, or
switch, the NICs will interconnect 4/8/16/24 machines
