Actually, only those who don't know about the smell and taste intracacies
of whiskey drink it straight. And those are more than likely to be the
barbarians.

You want to add enough water so that when you smell it, the prickle and
burning sensation you might feel on the nose when you sniff it straight
disappears. However, you don't want to add tap water. Bottled Scottish
water would be what I'd use. As a general rule, 30% water by volume might
be a good place to start. From there you can add more or less on your next
shot.
