Hi Bob,
Ya, the use of the term "mainframe" is a dated term, but an accurate.
I like your definition "file server accessible from many locations..".
Microsoft has one nicknamed "Gagk"(sp). It has several gigs of ram and
takes up a room about 40 by 40. To expand on your concept, the many
locations simultaneously from many locations from remote locations.
Basically, a person can access a computer through there own computer.
For example: I'm working on my masters' degree and I am conducting my
research through the ERIC. There is no way I could keep the records of
850,000 adstracts on my machine (perhaps on a CD rom, but then this
list would be dated, time and time again).
Keep your stick on the Ice,
Paul
