Turbulence forces Las Vegas-bound plane to land; seven injured
SEATTLE -- March 5, 1998 07:42 EST -- Unexpected air turbulence
rocked a packed Alaska Airlines jet Wednesday, injuring seven people
and forcing the plane to make an emergency landing, officials said.
Alaska Air flight flight 684 was heading from Seattle to Las
Vegas when it encountered the air pocket without warning outside
Reno, Nevada, at 1:25 p.m. PST, airline spokesman Lou Cancelmi said.
Several passengers and crew members were thrown to the ceiling
as the Boeing 737-200 dropped suddenly, according to passengers
interviewed in Reno, where the plane landed about 20 minutes later.
One flight attendant suffered a broken ankle and six other pas-
sengers and crew members were treated at a local hospital, mostly
for neck and back injuries, Cancelmi said.
A total of 111 passengers and five crew members were on the
flight, and most continued on to Las Vegas. The plane, which was
not damaged, was checked by inspectors from the Federal Aviation
Administration and then returned to Seattle.
(I thought the term "air pocket" was so archaic that it went
out of use with the Jenny. Jim)
