Mr. Churchill would neither confirm nor deny the story of an audience
given by the King and himself to an American banker at a time when the
outlook was bleakest for England. "London is being raided nightly,"
the King is supposed to have said. "Rommel may capture Suez. India
is in ferment. Japan menaces Australia. What to do, what to do?"
The banker pondered the King's words gravely and then suggested, "If
I were you, Your Majesty, I'd put Canada in the Queen's name!"
This captured my attention because it has to do with adversity &
because we've been on the phone to the U.K. a lot recently. We've spoken
with hospital staff several times, and we felt quite touched by how kind
& helpful they all were... particularly when they realized we were
calling from North America. We've also had some very good conversations
with relatives, two of whom offered us a place to stay if needed. And
Dallas's father is making a fine recovery now, or so we understand. It's
been an interesting experience in various ways... [wry grin].
