-> While remodeling my house, I ran across a couple of items. The first
-> a picture of a little girl taking her first steps. From the backgroun
-> it looks to be taken quite a while ago. The second was a paperback bo
-> written by George W. Childs in 1890. The name of this book is
-> "Recollections of General Grant". If anyone has any idea of the value
Hiya, Buck, just thought I'd throw my 2 cents and at least try to answer
your questions...
Picture : Depending on size, condition, and time period the photo was
taken really regulates price. Clues to look for : background - what is
behind or near the little girl ? furniture ? what type or " vintage " of
dress is she wearing ? anything hanging on the walls ?
(indoor), or if outdoor, automobiles or even earlier, horse & buggies ?
Or is it a studio type photo, with a single curtain or backdrop ?
(usually signed at bottom or back by studio). All of this is easily
checked with a quick stop to your local library. Check copies of old
magazines ( Sat. Eve. Post ) or mail order catalogs ( Sears & Roebuck )
and you should nail down an exact year. The older it is, the more it's
worth, and , in rare cases, if the photo turns out to be of someone
famous or even noteworthy ( like Mae West taking her first step ) yould
be " in gravy ", but since this is unlikely, I would have to say that
most photos taken after World War One run between $ 5.00 and $ 25.00
in most Antique Shops around here. The fact that it is a photo of a
child ( with nothing else in the photo ? ) puts it close to the lower
end.
Book : Turn of the century books are not to hard to find around here,
either, but that is not to say this paticular book isn't worth
something. There are several price guides on this subject, check the
local library, first, and then the book stores. Even if your book is not
mentioned by name, it will give a guige line to price by : date,
publisher, author, storyline, condition, etc.
If you find out anything else, and you feel like talking, let me know,
untill then...
