I tried this in BeOS using BeOS:Applications:Terminal and discovered that
none of the Alt keys work (!). This is definitely the fault of the
terminal. Maybe there is a better one available that you can download?
When you run keytest and hit Alt+A you should preferably see:
'^[' == 27 (0x001b)
'a' == 97 (0x0061)
Or some sort of output, anyway. The BeOS seems to want to steal the Alt
keys for its own purposes.
