TW>Busy, huh? I know the feeling ... I've been OK, retired 31-MAY-96 with the
TW>golden handshake,
You're too YOUNG to retire!!!! Well, at least you're still young enough
to enjoy it, unlike my husband's grandpa, who retired from his own
business at around 84(!). He was too old by then to DO anything!
TW>house is up for sale, thinking of moving to Arizona if
TW>this house ever sells, Wendy, my oldest is getting married in December,
TW>Amy, my youngest is going to Central Michigan University this Fall.
Wow! You HAVE got a lot going on! Tell Wendy congratulations for
me. Arizona? Why there?
TW>my AGs are back on eggs (first since they gave that one chick last
TW>Thanksgiving). We had a minor flooding here in Midland, caused my
TW>basement to take on drain tile water (no sewage) making it a pseudo-rain
TW>forest in their nesting area ... looks like it triggered some natural
TW>instincts for they are on two eggs, both of which look close to having
TW>some development (fingers crossed) IF they were one week old.
Cool! Humidity seems to sometimes set my conures off too, especially the
cherry-heads. I hope yours are both fertile--two babies are always more
fun than one!
It'll be interesting to watch what happens here this summer, as we had
central A/C installed last fall. Our basement is wonderfully cool and
dry this year for the first time ever...I expect the cherries probably
won't breed. I've opened both of the bird room windows, but the A/C is
over-powering the small amount of air that's coming in. (Yes, all the
basement vents are shut off, but the cool air comes back down the
basement stairs...we need to figure out how to install a door at the
top of the poorly designed stairwell opening that won't interfere with
the kitchen when it's not closed.)
TW>the first egg to be two weeks old ... not really sure as my "leave alone"
TW>method is still in place ... ie, no bed checking every day. I am concerned
TW>as at the time of fertilization we had a lot of ruckus around here showing
TW>the house and all ... and with *that* male being so skiddish. :(
Well, you never know. You didn't think they'd get it right the last
time either, and look at the surprise you got!
TW>More Jendays? That's great! I assume that all is well and your aviary is
TW>still disease free ... (I know how you worry).
I'm confident that we're "clean" here--I had these last two guys tested
and got yet another negative. This is 3 years now that we've gotten no
positive results. I'm still 'paranoid', and will remain a closed aviary,
but I'm relaxing a little about the birds that are here.
OH--btw, the two babies are both males. I figured that since I was
sending in stuff to the lab anyway, I'd sex them at the same time. So
now Rio & Paco's count is up to 7 male babies, and 2 females thus far
(since 1993).
TW>Agreed, 5 weeks is way too young to be weaned. But if you think that at
TW>day one, the bird is *starting* to wean (this IS true), then somewhere
TW>along the line a bird must show it's mother by some instinct that weaning
TW>is approaching ... what better way than to shove it back to mom?
I've never seen any evidence that this happens in the nestbox (no
messes, nothing on the babies). I check the nest often enough that if
this DID happen, I'd have seen it at least once or twice.
TW>Mess aside, the regurgitation is a natural (involuntary) action ... mother
TW>Natures way of saying something to you ... what do YOU hear?
Lately I've been hearing "Find another hobby, one that doesn't
puke on you!"
TW>When Tinker regurgitated (~5 weeks), I did give (her?) baths she seemed to
TW>not mind if the water was the same temp as the food. In fact, I doubt if
TW>she even knew she was in water ... I used a towel to blot her and then she
TW>went back to the aquarium (no drafts). Took X2 time, but didn't have a
TW>choice ... seems as though you don't either ... sigh ...
I've been wiping them down with damp paper towels. They're mostly
feathered now (everything but lower bellies), and what they get on each
other wipes off more easily than it did off their down feathers. They
still have a few 'crunchy' spots, but they're preening themselves (and
each other) quite well now, so those are going away too.
TW>Not heard anything of Reg. Not hidding. My service has been ON again /
TW>OFF (mostly) again. I've posted at least a dozen messages within FIDO in
TW>the last 6 months w/o a reply ... sigh ... VERY PLEASENT TO SEE YOUR
TW>RESPONSE!
It's good to have you back again. Fido has been VERY unreliable
lately--messages are turning up missing all over the place. Quite
frustrating sometimes. I have an address for Reg, but I'm not sure he's
still there--it's from December, the last time I heard from him. I'm
a little worried...
