I know of at least one commercial library with a reasonably accurate
string class that they claim will work with BC++ 3.1. However, I doubt
it's of much use to you: the library is substantially more expesive than
upgrading your compile would be.

You obviously have an attitude problem here. Your priorities are badly
skewed. There is _always_ sufficient money on the budget for compiler
upgrades. You may have to start an "eating is optional" lifestyle for a
time, but it's really for the best. The medical people point out that
most of us in the civilized parts of the world would be better off for
losing some weight. If you simply quit eating for a month or two, it's
a near certainty that you _won't_ gain any weight during that time!
