subject: WTF is going on?

.. One fine day, Bill waffled to Paul..

 Hello Bill,

BG> Hey Paul, will you please fix your heap-of-shit Spirit, or piss it
BG> off and buy a real modem? On at least six different occasions in the
BG> last fortnight, the modems negotiate, then just as I'd expect a connect
BG> message, the sequence starts again, but just with a single tone which
BG> continues until I drop carrier. Once or twice I could handle, but
BG> every second day is a royal PITA, especially at STD rates.

Do you have a Maestro ? I don't know if that is relevant, but I
 have the same problems.

BG> BTW, this happens as late as 0830 DST (I simply gave up after that).

It happens anytime, but since I call around 2300-2400, it seems
 to happen most noticeably then.

BTW when I was in QLD, the problem did not occur once, and I
called at least 6 times - the failure rate in Syd is usually
 50%.

I thought it was the phone line in Syd, but then after I got
back I had no failed negotiations because I was using the laptop
instead of the desktop PC that I had in the past. So I thought
I had a crook serial port or cable.

 Until last night. Failed negotiation.

So it's either the phone line or the modem. And I was pretty
 sure you had a Maestro.

 Dieter
