Hello, David! (21 Apr 05 06:47, David Drummond >> Malcolm Miles):
DD> Why do "we" have to have control of the domain name? What
exactly does
DD> it do that "we" need?
We in R50 have near the same situation. Domain name
"fidonet.net" belong to former Fidoman, Fedor Ustinov. And of
course, it makes us troubles.
You have own name, "fido.jabberwocky.com.au". Thus anybody can
found your IP. I have only IP. I need some technical assistance to
translate my fido address in FQDN. And "fidonet.net" provide this
service. 2:5022/60 is translated into f60.n5022.z2.fidonet.net and any Inet
routine can found my IP.
Would we lost this service, we will need to rearrange a lot in our configs.
Of course, one can work with raw IP, but in case one need to parse
nodelist each time. Easy FQDN is more convenient.
