CR> Ultimate Spinach -- III
CR> I bought this at a Rhino records outlet in L.A. because it was cheap.
CR> Stuart told me that they were suppossed to be Psych. Well, it's not
KN>
KN> They were pure hype back then and still are, like Moby
KN> Grape. Yet people I trust swear by both bands. Go figger.
I'm not a fan of Ultimate Spinach, but I *do* swear by Moby Grape.
Proggie they ain't, but they play superior hard country rock. These
guys did what Lynyrd Skynyrd became stars doing, ten years earlier and
(IMHO) better.
They showed up in NYC the other week to do a couple of club dates, with
three of the original members (Peter Lewis, Jerry Miller, and Bob
Mosely), a new drummer (Don Stevenson is apparently selling condo
time-shares these days), and Sam Andrews of Big Brother and the Holding
Company filling in for Skip Spence. (Spence faxed a greeting from
Laguna during the set. "He's a couch potato now. Really!" commented
Mosely.)
30 years later, and these guys still rocked like crazy and seemed to
be loving it. They did most of the first album, which is one of my all
time favorites, so I was *very* happy camper.
