I don't think so, probably the "Sentinal" and "Kittel" vertical boilers had a
degree of "flash" heating? This is one of those areas where a lot of money
could be spent working out the optimium design.
There were suggestions from engineers that other gases than water could be
used in a closed cycle system.
(I know, water isn't a gas :-)
