subject: Editting Suite

-> I would like to purchase an editting suite.
-> -SVHS (Yeah, I know Betacam is better, but $$$; and Hi8, but
-> compatibility with school is also needed)
-> -Cut Editting, no special effects would be required
-> -Slightly upgradable, so that if I want to add a third machine or and
-> graphics. -external Jog Shuttle
-> What set-up would you recommend?
-> What is the cost(specify currency)?
-> Who is selling it(Though most will add this in the above)?
-> What are the strong points?
-> What are the weak points?
-> Why did you recommend it?
-> Any other information?
Well, personally, I would recommend the Panasonic AG-1970/1970/AG96
set-up. It'll run you in the neighborhood of $1200/deck and $400 for
the multi-event controller. It's S-VHS/VHS, hi-fi, TBC built into the
decks, modifiable to add 2 channel sound (even dub time code to one
channel). I've never used it, but everything I've heard and read says
it's a great set-up. If I had the money, I might go for it. If you
want something more professional, JVC offers a nice system for $(?). It
consists of the BR-S800U/BR-S500U and RM-G800U edit controller.
Boasting time-code, 4 channel audio (2 hi-fi/2 linear), and expansion
slots for future upgrades. The controller has 2 GPI ports for
compatability with accessories (i.e. add the Videonics MX-1 and time out
some awesome effects!).
Panasonic has just released a great little set-up as well. The
Panasonic AG-DS850 slow-motion recorder with TBC and VITC, LTC time-code
generator/reader. Hi-fi, etc. It's new and supposedly VERY good! Also
available and recommended is the slow-motion edit controller.
Lastly, the system I looked at a few years ago. It'll run you in the
neighborhood of $10k, but worth it. The JVC BR-S611U, BR-S811U, and
RM-G810U combo. $9380 as a system from Vidicomp (800)622-6599. SMPTE
time-code read/write. Nice system! We have the VHS version at school
and it performs exceptionally well.
I think you would be happiest with the Panasonic slow-mo system if you
have the money. Video is not cheap and if you buy cheap like I did to
start with, you won't be happy. Good luck!!
BJ McKinney.
