Try this init string on for size:
AT&F2M0W2
The &F2 sets the modem back to factory default, M0 sets speaker to
always off, and W2 sets Result codes not reported and CONNECT XXXXX
reports connection (DCE) speed (providing S95 is not set higher than
0). 
That should solve what you asked for.
