I eventually gave up trying to understand the subtle (and often unsubtle)
differences with WATCOM Make, and went back to GNU Make. If there's no
"real" standard, then fine, I can make GNU Make =my= standard. It's good
enough, it has been ported to every platform I work on, and it's free.
