Clipless pedals allows the pedals stroke to be more efficient. What I mean by
this is that you will generate power continuously . This was attainable with
toe clips mind you, but the the new system allows for more direct contact
then did those rat traps. I'm not sure if you had toe clips before, but if
you didn't you will definately notice the positive change. Clipless pedals
now a days are simple to get out of even during a fall. I recommend them. I
could never go back to rat traps.
As far as which is better, well I'm not sure. There is a variety out there
and like bikes people like one brand over another. Some will say get one that
is wide enough to support your foot in order not to get sore spots which can
happen with small pedals. Other like small pedals because they allow more
clearance when making sharp turns. Lightness is also a facture for some and
titanium spindles is important. Weigh all of this out and I'm sure you will
find something you will like. At the moment I am using Time pedals. They are
wide and since My foot on the left side seems to stick out the six degree of
movement the pedal allows laterally it suits me fine.
Good luck
