V34 supports different speeds for sending and receiving. So you can be
receiving info at 26.4, but transmitting at 33.6....
I wouldn't pay much attention to the connect speeds. V34 is designed to use
the best possible speed, and although you may connect at 26.4, your modem
may/will shift up (or down) if the line is capable of it.
I have a SupraFAXModem with the LED display. When I connect to others, the
speed often fluctuates up and down. The SupraFAX can be setup to show the
transmit and receive speeds.
