But if that is true, then is the term "heresy" applicable?

[Maybe. Heresy is generally considered to be an erroneous version of
Christianity. While they reject traditional Christianity, they claim
to be the Church established by Christ. Some mainstream Christians
consider them a highly unusual type of Christianity, others reject
the term Christian for them. The first would presumably call them
a heresy, the second not Christian at all.
