I am a Calvinist, but cannot speak for all Calvinist.

I think you are both right, as I read the verses I want to and I read
those verses THE WAY I want to. The trick is, to want to understand
what the author is trying to say.

Am I to understand that non-Calvinist read verses they don't want to,
and read verses THE WAY they don't want to? ;-)

One's doctrine should be mutable and should be able to change shape as
one's understanding of scripture and the witness of God's creation
attempts to refashion it.

The problem for some is that they have received their doctrine as a
package of antique immutable petrified precepts. And, when they read
scripture and try to understand God's creation, they feel a need to
modify their understanding of those things to fit their doctrine. So
when they read scripture and run across the word "brother" they may
read "male cousin" and the word "sister" may be
translated into "female
cousin". And they feel a need to carefully squeeze, mold and trim many
other words and phrases to prevent them from offending their doctrines.
