The leading one makes it absolute within his document structure and is not
really required.

The trailing one is sometimes required - but that may be peculiar to my
Apache server (yes I know Michiel's files aren't on my server). It
sometimes seems confused between a directory name and a file name (in *nix
files don't always have extensions). The trailing slash forces it to be a
directory.

It could be this Safari thingy that is confused and not Apache of course...
I should do more testing but it's easier to just put in the /
