I don't know about the PC, but Ratsoft BBS on the ST had a very
programmable emulation scheme.  A friend of mine had done a bunch of
ATASCII screens and made an ATASCII terminal emulation for it.  He
never had an 8-bit, but he used the ST-Xformer to make them, and
thought ATASCII was cool... :-)
