subject: WTF is going on?

DM> .. One fine day, Bill waffled to Paul..

 DM> Hello Bill,

BG> Hey Paul, will you please fix your heap-of-shit Spirit, or piss it

BG> off and buy a real modem? On at least six different occasions in the

BG> last fortnight, the modems negotiate, then just as I'd expect a

 DM> connect

BG> message, the sequence starts again, but just with a single tone which

BG> continues until I drop carrier. Once or twice I could handle, but

BG> every second day is a royal PITA, especially at STD rates.

DM> Do you have a Maestro ? I don't know if that is relevant, but I

 DM> have the same problems.

BG> BTW, this happens as late as 0830 DST (I simply gave up after that).

DM> It happens anytime, but since I call around 2300-2400, it seems

DM> to happen most noticeably then.

DM> BTW when I was in QLD, the problem did not occur once, and I

DM> called at least 6 times - the failure rate in Syd is usually

 DM> 50%.

DM> I thought it was the phone line in Syd, but then after I got

DM> back I had no failed negotiations because I was using the laptop

DM> instead of the desktop PC that I had in the past. So I thought

DM> I had a crook serial port or cable.

DM> Until last night. Failed negotiation.

DM> So it's either the phone line or the modem. And I was pretty

DM> sure you had a Maestro.

the maestro 144m that i use (not own) seems to get through ok every

time, i can't remember the last time that negotiation failed.
