Bramwell may be working on the idea that these short films were being
used as a substitution for live performance. In truth, the Blackies(*)
of the thirties -- short films that feature a black musician singing a
song amidst a narrative -- can be seen as the first real 'videos'
followed by the video jukebox which tried to commercialize the idea of
selling music by film as well as sound.

(*) The term Blackies is the official term for short films with an all
black cast, something definitively different in Hollywood at that time
which was also known for blackface or all-white casts.
