DS>Take two I guess. Call waiting and all that. Anyway, The point that I
DS>was trying to make was that the diver in question should keep in mind
DS>that all of these people in the medical and SCUBA field are only
DS>interested in seeing SAFE participation in the sport and that they are
DS>not the "enemy." Given this on e must still question the absolute role
DS>of medical approval before a fully informed adult can make a descision
DS>for themself regarding the acceptable level of risk that they are
DS>willing to take concerning an activity they desire to do.
I think you are correct here!
DS>The concept where an organization or government has the right to
DS>prohibit an activity based on looking out for the well being of the
DS>participent is called paternalism. Seat belt laws and such reflect a
DS>level of paternalism by the government that has proven to be veryu
DS>controversial and I think there is some of that going on here.
Quite often what could be seen as paternalism is often over caution of
the medical profession, the attitude is " it is better to keep 10
healthy people from diving than to allow one person to dive who may
suffer health problems or death as a result of the diving".
DS>Anyway I am more playing devils advocate than anything
DS>else and am just trying to spark some conversation.
DS> Be wet and well.
Actually playing devil's advocate is healthy and sparks discussion and
discourse, all of which brings more data into a question...which is
good.
