RC>>> The USS Kitty Hawk, last of its class to be decommisioned
RC>>> in 2008.
RC>>> The USS John F Kennedy, last and only of its class to be
RC>>> decommissioned in wow 2 weeks!
BK>> Like I care?
RC> Two carriers will leave the fleet.
Yes. Either it will not affect the strength of the fleet, or
it's due to the fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush
administration.
The first means it isn't significant. The second would be no
more than I would expect.
RC>>> The USS Enterprise, scheduled to leave service in 2014 to
RC>>> 2015.
BK>> Ok, that one I do care about.
RC> Its the first nuclear powered carrier, it makes sense that
RC> it leaves service close to 50 years after enterring.
Still matters. At least to me.
RC> Compare its lifetime to that of the diesel powered ones,
RC> the Essex Class, The Lexington Class, The Forrestal Class.
RC>>> CVN 78 the USS Gerald R Ford is slated to take its place.
BK>> Should be replaced by a new Enterprise. When Nixon renamed the
BK>> shuttle "Constitution" the "Enterprise",
an evident pandering to
BK>> the Star Trek constituency, someone said, "It's not the first
BK>> time the constitution was undermined by an enterprising group."
RC> I dont think they have replaced a ship of same type with
RC> another using the same name?
Perhaps not immediately.

"The carrier that fought the most through the entire war..."
Dedicatory Plaque, Enterprise Tower, U.S. Naval Academy
Enterprise entered World War II on the morning of December 7,
1941, when her scout planes encountered the Japanese squadrons
attacking Pearl Harbor. Not until May 14, 1945, when a Kamikaze
attack off Kyushu, Japan, left a gaping hole in her flight deck,
as she forced to leave the war.
Of the more than twenty major actions of the Pacific War,
Enterprise engaged in all but two. Her planes and guns downed
911 enemy planes; her bombers sank 71 ships, and damaged or
destroyed 192 more. Her presence inspired both pride and fear:
pride in her still unmatched combat record, and fear in the
knowledge that Enterprise and hard fighting were never far
apart.
**************************************************************************
RC> It might not be unconceivable that a subsequent Ford Class
RC> carrier does get named "Enterprise".
Should be the Enterprise class. Or someone dead at least 25
years. Not a recently deceased politician.
RC> Remember, The USS Nimitz will probably leave service in
RC> 2025, presuming that the Pentagon feels 12 carrier
RC> battlegroups is optimum strength, they will replace one as
RC> older ones leave service.
Used to be the Navay complained that they didn't need the new
carrier when the politicians decided to build one more.
BK>> Looks like another in process.
RC>>> As stated previously, CVN 77 the Bush is also a transition
RC>>> ship.
BK>> Shouldn't be. Should be the Enterprise, or almost anything else
BK>> not politically connected.
RC> You are truly the epitome of stupidity.
You are truly the epitome of right wing corruption.
RC> Its a transition ship in regards to technology and design
RC> you idiot.
That doesn't matter you idiot.
RC>>> Now you know.
BK>> I'm thrilled.
RC> Its my pleasure to educate you forever dumb democrats.
It's our duty to remind you dumb republicans how badly you have
screwed things up.
