Hello Michael:

MG> First of all, my system is an IBM ThinkPad 340:
 MG> - 486SLC2/50
 MG> - 8 MB RAM
 MG> - 120 MB HDD

You said it; your HD is way to small for Warp (including SWAP file) and
to have multiple applications.

MG> The hard drive is small, so I installed Stacker for OS/2 at the same
MG> time. This was an involved process since the drive was already
MG> Stacked with Windows Stacker: I had to uncompress it (which involved
MG> backing up and deleting some files to create space) and then recompress
MG> it with Stacker for OS/2. I implemented the dual boot option and did
MG> not reformat the drive with HPFS.

My experience with Stacker for OS/2 was that it slowed down everything to
the point that it was painful to use; my solution was to get rid of Stacker
and get a 540 meg HD. What would it cost you to get a bigger HD for your
ThinkPad?

MG> Installing Warp itself was not too much trouble though every time I
MG> booted up, the system was excruciatingly slow. Opening applications
MG> took a lifetime, whether OS/2 or Windows. Printing a document from
MG> the BonusPak WP resulted in a page of garbage; opening a window for
MG> WinWord 6 usually worked fine.

See my comments on Stacker for OS/2. If you have the space, try upping
your SWAP file to 2048 16000. It might help. Either dump the IBMWORKS
part of the Bonus Pack or deregister the objects. That might help.

MG> By far, the most irritating problem was the SWAP file: the SWAP file
MG> was set at 10 MB yet grew beyond that limit to take up all of the
MG> scarce real estate on the drive. This forced me to shut down in the
MG> midst of whatever I was working on. The system also crashed with
 MG> alarming regularity.

MG> Are these common problems? I saw something in the conference about a
MG> problem with the "growing SWAP file." I'll admit that raves from
MG> other Warp users raised my expectations. I, however, was pretty
 MG> disappointed. -!-

Can't blame you. WARP needs some space to operate in and you are in a
marginal situation with the size of your HD. Your ram and processor speed
should be OK.

Take a hard look at what you installed from the WARP Install disks and
see what you can do without. I would start with getting rid of IBMWORKS
(you will save about 10 megs of HD space, bring your starting SWAPFILE
up, get ahold of a Freeware utility called CFGINFO by Rick Meigs (latest
version is CFGINFO4.ZIP) run that to see where you might be able to tweak
your CONFIG.SYS, check to make sure your have /IRQ after your printer
statement (the default is polling and it can be SLOW).

If you don't need the WPS you might look at alternatives such as FileBar
or TSHELL. They could help your performance and you can multitask with
DOS apps, text type OS/2 apps, and Windows.

Hope some of these suggestions help you out. WARP is a fine multitasking
OS and I'd hate to see you leave it.

Regards,

Stu Davis
