In our last episode, DAVE JANSEN and ALL were battling
over Xena comic.
DJ> I wish that they had just given her a monthly reguler series, or even
DJ> a bi weekly one.Overall, They've been well drawn & written,
It is rather curious that Topps keeps releasing the Xena comics as
3-issue mini-series instead of just going the monthly route. And
even more so that they are overlapping them, starting another before
the first one is finished. I think what may have happened is that
when the started the Hercules monthly it didn't do very well, so
even though Xena turned out to be a big hit on TV, even bigger than
Hercules, they decided to give her a shot at a comic book, but were
reluctant to comit to a monthly. After the first Xena mini-series
was successful, Topps must have decided they liked that format,
and have stuck with it. Actually I don't really mind, because
this was I can usually get two Xena comics a month. Plus I get
to watch her on TV 3 or 4 times a week.
DJ> but the magazine seems padded.
And even so, it is rather thin. If it weren't Xena, I'm not sure
it would be worth the money for me.
DJ> Topps is VERY lucky to have landed this book!
DJ> Quite a cope to snatch it away from marvel,dc, & dark horse!
DC I can understand, in that the Xena TV show is distributed
by Universal, and DC Comics is owned by Warner Bros. so maybe
they didn't want to give the competition the business. And
Toy Biz seems to have sort of blown it with the Xena action
figures, so maybe this soured Universal on Marvel too, which
owned Toy Biz. So this leave Dark Horse, who already has several
licensed books. Maybe Universal felt they would get more
personal service from Topps, which doesn't publish very many
other comics.
