You have to use "Escape"-sequences, most printers understand them. Take a  
look to your printer manual.
     HP commands     =  Ec(s#H
     decimal value   =  027 040 115 #...# 072
     Hex value       =  1B 28 73 #...# 48
The following setup strings should work...
?? chr(27)+"(10U"                 // select PC-8 symbol set
?? chr(27)+"(s0p0s18h4102T"       // 0p = non proportional font
                                  // 0s = non italic font
                                  // 18h = 18 cpi
