JA> While I lack the electrical engineering background and
JA> extpertice to address the comparison of integrated units compared to
JA> separates with a point by point narrative I will venture the opinion
JA> that it IS possible to build integrated units of the same quality and
JA> sound as separates. What I do question, and I base this on
JA> listening...and audio periodical reviews...is whether they are in fact
JA> being made that way. I have yet to see the glowing reviews and reports
JA> of integrated units as we constantly do separates. If they are being
JA> built, where are they? I have heard many really excellent
JA> integrated units in my rounds. Yet I have not heard an "extraordinary"
JA> integrated unit, at any price point, that will hold its own with the
JA> better separate units. While I do not read all the monthly/semi
While I won't debate the fact that there aren't many different
units being made, there ARE some good ones out there. The Acurus
DIA, tubed Anthem, and YBA come to mind in the $1000 to $2000
range. Considering these units, I think the 'sweet spot' for
high quality integrateds is $1000 to $1500, where the available
separates aren't typically of the same quality.
JA> monthly audio rags, my reading is pretty well rounded from
JA> Stereophile, Audio, Sensible Sound (Defender of Best Sound For The
JA> Least Money), Stereo Review, Home Theater Monthly, Stereophiles Home
JA> Theater and Speaker Builder. Some have reviewed the best offerings of
JA> Marantz, Denon, Carver, Proton, Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, Yamaha, etc in
JA> integrated units, none have proclaimed them on a level of the best
JA> separates. So while I do not believe everyone should buy
But I consider the best of separates typically cost more than
the above mentioned brands.
JA> separates, nor that much of the high end separates will sound that
JA> much better to the average casual or livingroom listener, I do not
JA> believe integrated units are the equal of separates. And, I still
When compared to what you listed above, of course!
JA> believe that anyone beginning to pursue Audio as a past time should
JA> seek out the high end dealers in their area and go have a listen...as
Agree 100%. Two or three grand for an entire system, shoot,
even one grand, will sound far better than buying some of
the higher-end models of mid fi from the super stores.
JA> well as begin going to live performances. To not do so would be an
JA> invitation to wasting your money. As far as my statement that
JA> power capabilities of an amp (the more the better) having to do with
JA> better control of the speaker and its' mechanics, beyond its
JA> indication/ability of volume levels, I will have to stick by this
This is where my opinion differs, but I suspect its more
related to the types of music being listened to. My little
40watt per channel Golden Tube amp killed EVERYTHING in the
sub $1000 price range for the jazz and folk music I listen
to most. I will agree the 7 or 9 watt single ended amps out
there are pretty crazy. Other low watt amps that sound great
are the 30watt Pass, and the BEL (50 watt?). Unless you fall
in love with a hard to drive speaker, or play super dynamic
and full range speaker at concert levels, better quality amps
do better IMHO.
JA> also. However, beyond a certain point, power capabilities ONLY give
JA> bragging rights and offer nothing more to the control of the speaker.
JA> This cut off level will depend largely on the speaker themselves,
Many owners of my amp use speakers of average efficiency (86-
89db) with much success, mine are 92.
JA> their quality and sensitivity. I am sorry it has taken so long
JA> to get back to you. Had a serious bout in the hospital and am just
JA> shaking the "brain blender" effects of eating and breathing through
JA> tubes for two weeks. Cheers, John
Happy listening!
