Start w/ the C programming language in a VDM. This will get you up to
speed w/ both programming and the PC. If you had a fair amount of
assembly experience on the mainframe you will enjoy it on the PC, as
well.

Robert LaFore, Waite Group, has a good starter book for assembly on the
PC. I used it when I got access to a PC. I had been doing assembly
under MVS/VM/DOS. LaFore also wrote a version for C, following the same
format, but I used the K&R C programming book. I am using LaFore's book
for C++ programming.

I have had good luck w/ Borland's Turbo C++ 3.0 (it does both C and
C++). That was the cheapest compiler I could find. If you do use
Turbo C++, be sure to turn DPMI setting to on!

I would recommend becoming familiar w/ C before tackling PM programming,
but a good starter is Petzold's OS/2 PM Programming.

IBM has a full technical reference library for PM, like the ones you
were used to on the mainframe. They come w/ plastic binders, but I tore
those off and put the books into black binders, just like the mainframe!
