-> Mark, I've fought remote install thru a bunch of machines - some were
-> almost impossible to get going. Couple of suggestions that might
-> help.
Thanks for all the tips!
-> One hint from 'the good ole days' is to move the NIC on the problem
-> machine off of the default 300h address. That was a big cause of
-> problems a while back. Seems to have gone away now, but your 386 may
-> have a problem.
Shouldn't be too difficult....I just checked, and all the computers
on the network are configured at 300h. The cards are software
configurable, so I don't even have to mess with any dip switches.
-> Also, I don't recall what you said, but kill all the
-> caches on the 386 for the install.
There shouldn't be any, if I'm not mistaken. SMARTDRV is loaded
when it's booting into DOS...but the OS/2 boot disks shouldn't be
loading it. As for hardware caches, I'm pretty sure this old
machine doesn't even have any.
-> You should also strip all but essential hardware out of the
-> 386 until you get the system up.
Also shouldn't be an issue on this machine. Since it's used for
the BBS only, it's pretty much bare essentials....I/O card, network
card, and a video card...nothing else. The modem is an external
AT&T, so there's not even a separate card in there for that (and
it doesn't even have a mouse plugged in!).
Thanks for the tips!
