Your syntax is correct, though the parentheses are extraneous.  If it is
not behaving as you expect then you probably are having a problem with case
sensitivity.  How are you obtaining/assigning a value for a?  You probably
need to change ARG to PARSE ARG or PULL to PARSE PULL to preserve the case
as passed on the command line or input from the keyboard, respectively. 
PARSE and ARG alone convert input to upper case and would cause your lower
case string comparisons to always fail.
